When it comes to fashion trends, they always make a comeback. No matter how tacky or so “old fashion” they may be, they always come back. Year after year, season after season, fashion trends make an appearance after being inside the fashion vault for so long. I remember skinny jeans where the “it” fashion trend in the mid 2010’s and they somehow dissapeared years later, with JNCO being the new jean trend. To my surprise, the one denim trend I have noticed lately has made its way out of the vault that I never expected to become popular: the denim skirt.
As a child, I was brought up in the Pentecostal faith and that meant I had to dress in skirts or dresses to church. Majority of the time, those skirts were always denim skirts. I was a pro at pairing denim skirts with tennis shoes because, as a teen, I never liked wearing flip flops or open toed shoes. I never grew out of wearing tennis shoes with denim skirts because no matter what, those two fashion choices always made sense to me and they made me look cool.
Fast foward to today, I noticed that there’s a new fashion trend occurring all around, the maxi denim skirt with the long slit in the front. As someone who’s worn denim skirts her whole life, this was the perfect opportunity to create a blog about ideas to pair denim skirts. Even though I’m not a teen anymore where all I paired with my denim skirts was with tennis shoes, I incorporated three different types of shoes in this fashion blog.
I purchased two maxi denim skirts from H&M and as I tried them on, it took me back to my teen years. Even though I grew out of the denim skirt era to wearing more adult appropriate fashion outfits like dresses or slacks to church, trying on those skirts, I still felt like that teen girl who loved pairing vans, converse, and yes, even nikes, with my denim skirts.
As I mentioned before, pairing denim skirts with tennis shoes has never been out of style so when I experimented in pairing tops and shoes with the skirts I ordered, when it came to pairing them with my nike court legacy tennis shoes, they didn’t look bad at all. I had so much fun pairing the following top three fashion pieces with denim skirts!
- Biker Fashion: Leather Jacket & Nike Shoes

Of course, I had to begin with tennis shoes! I absolutely love how this outfit looked. With the right tennis shoes, everything else fell into place. I paired the skirt with a simple black t-shirt and my Old Navy leather jacket and it turned out to be a great casual look.

2. Business Casual: White Button Down Shirt with Nude Patent Heels

This look came out fantastic! I decided to buy a light denim skirt with the idea to pair with a light colored top and shoes and I love how classy and chic this came out! My younger me would be happy to know that I could wear heels with denim skirts.

3. Casual Fashion: Tank top with Loafers

For a more casual look, I decided to go with a simple yet chic look so I paired the skirt with a black tank top, long black necklace and my Sam Edelman mules. This simple casual look is my favorite from all three because it can also be considered business casual, just throw in a sweater and presto!

Conclusion
Denim skirts are a timeless fashion piece that can be styled in various ways. Mini, Maxi, whatever lenght-type skirt, denim skirts are versatile and can be dressed up or down depending on the occasion. Pair it with a simple t-shirt and sneakers for a casual look, or dress it up with a blouse and heels for a more formal event. I really love how this timeless fashion piece has made its way back in 2024.
